Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, Frances is of Southern Tutchone ancestry and of the Khajit (Crow) moiety and a Citizen of Champagne and Aishihik First Nations. A contemporary artist, her recent focus has been on mastering techniques involving the use of traditional materials. She aspires to create a body of work using local materials, ancient motifs and traditional techniques. To this end she has actively sought out local sources of various materials such as stone, spruce root, ochre, wood and seeds. Frances has taught youth and adults in different locations and situations, including the local school, in workshops and out on the land. These teaching projects included cedar bark weaving; the collection and preparation of spruce root; atlatl spear-making; painting floor cloths; tanning gopher skins; and moose hide tanning. Teaching is an opportunity to transfer knowledge to the next generation and is a learning opportunity for her as well.
