Vashti is a Mountain Slavey- Kaska Dene First Nation from her mother’s side and Chipewyan- Cree on her Father’s side. She comes from the Wolf clan and is originally from Ross River, Yukon. Vashti is an emerging artist whose inspiration for traditional crafts and beadwork came from her late grandmother Eva Etzel (Ollie). Last year Vashti received the “Most promising Emerging Artist” award. Vashti would like her children to know their roots and to grow up with the traditional crafts that she had as child and to be proud. She is a self-taught artist and is always learning new skills. She enjoys blending traditional and contemporary designs with beadwork or porcupine quills and plans to continue her grandmother’s legacy. Vashti recently uprooted her family from Whitehorse to her Traditional Territory where she plans on spending a lot of time on the land with her family.
