Workshops & Lectures

For generations, First Nations people have been sharing their traditional skills and knowledge with one another. The Festival workshop series is an opportunity for our participating artists to share this skill and creativity with you. Become inspired as you take part in one or more hands on workshops exploring disciplines such as wood and antler carving, painting, beading, moose hair tufting, Raven’s Tail weaving, traditional sewing, stained glass, knife making, birch bark basket and jewellery making, storytelling, drumming, songwriting, and much more. Beginner to advanced workshops are offered, running 3-7 hours in length.

Online registration will be open for workshops May 2017. Between June 30 - July 6, registration will only be available on-site.

Friday, July 1

Daily Drop-In: Stamp Carving › 10:00am – 5:00pm

In this workshop, you will make a Beaded Suncatcher with Dolores Scheffen. A Beaded Suncatchers are similar to a Dreamcatcher, only strung with transparent beads of rainbow colours for hanging in a window to catch the sun’s rays. (Size 3” Diameter).

Youth Stained Glass Mosaic › 2:00pm – 4:00pm

This workshop is for creative youth, ranging from 6 - 16 years of age. Participants will be given the chance to find their inspiration and develop there artistic style, while, making a 12″x12″ concrete mosaic stepping stone.

In this advanced stained glass workshop, Amy Tessaro will mentor you over the course of a week towards creating a 22” round pattern. All patterns will be provided. You will learn about the history of stained glass, techniques, along with the tools and materials used. She will also cover where to find supplies for future projects. Beaver Fur Teddy Bear › 10:00am – 4:30pm

Lena White

Join Lena and learn to create cute and cuddly fur teddy bears.

Born in Ville La Salle, Quebec, and raised in Ontario, and Northern B.C. Lena moved to the Yukon in 1995.  It was then she took an immediate interest in the Traditional sewing and beadwork of the First Nation women. Taught by her Mother in Law, Annie Smith of the Kwanlin Dun First Nation, Lena can make almost anything, or else she will create a pattern, and then design it.  In 2007 Lena moved to Inuvik, NWT and took the Traditional Arts Progam there, to learn about another Territory’s sewing and beadwork. It was something she was able to bring back to her Mother in Law Annie, and teach her. Lena is always sewing something, and loves the challenge of a new creation, whether it be moccasins, fur caps, or kamiks.  Next step for Lena is Nunavut, with Arctic College’s Fur and Fashion Design Program.

Drums are round to reflect the Circle of Life. The drumbeat is the heart beat of Mother Earth. During this 6hour workshop participants will use deer rawhide and a wooden frame to complete a 15inch deer rawhide drum and mallet in the Cree style. As a bonus participants will also learn about the various drum cultures of Canada’s Aboriginal People.
