Ida Calmegane was born and raised in Carcross, Yukon Territory. As a result of Ida’s grandmother giving her own Tlingit name to Ida, she took a keen interest in Ida. Ida was taught traditional practices such as setting snares and knowledge of traditional medicines. In 1976, when Ida came back home to take care of her mother, her mother emphasized the importance of these traditional teachings. Ida’s mother was an excellent storyteller, and Ida brought her mother to many storytelling events, listening in the background. This is how Ida became a wonderful storyteller herself.
