Brandon Kyikavichik was born and raised in Old Crow, attending the local school until Grade 10 and then finishing high school in Whitehorse. He returned to live in Old Crow after a year of post-secondary education in order to contribute to his community and learn more about the Gwich’in language. Brandon’s reputation as a talented speaker has earned him diverse speaking and educational engagements from conferences, gatherings and colleges. He spent several years serving as a councillor for the Vuntut Gwitchin and has worked on natural resources fisheries and heritage projects since he was 15 years old. Brandon has also worked on several film projects including Our World both as a film maker and a youth mentor. He has also worked as a youth mentor for oral history research projects and assisted with archaeological investigations. Brandon took his natural aptitude for learning the Gwich’in language more seriously and worked closely with his mentor, the late Elder Joel Peter, in order to gain fluency by translating and transcribing Gwich’in long ago stories, include Gwich’in language play scripts. Brandon is Heritage Interpreter at the John Tizya Centre in Old Crow.
